Eco-friendly Workout Clothes

There are already enough barriers (i.e. time, weather, motivation) between us and our exercise routines. Let’s scratch one off the list: the idea that your leggings are contributing to climate change. Here are some eco-friendly brands promoting sustainability and ethical labor practices, and some information on how to identify others:

Threads 4 Thought launched out of NYC with “a commitment to reducing environmental impact” and sourcing quality materials. Now based in LA, they sell men’s and women’s exercise and casual/outdoor apparel, and their bestsellers are their sweatshirts and fleeces for after workouts.

Mate the Label is a women’s activewear label with the philosophy, “Luxurious textures, clean silhouettes, positive impact.” Their company organization and careful sourcing practices earned several climate-friendly certifications. They sell workout basics and comfortable layering pieces in a neutral palate that easily become wardrobe staples.

Founded on the premise of fair-trade organic materials, Pact sells men’s and women’s clothing as well as organic cotton bedding, with a commitment to sustainability and transparent sourcing of the highest standard of organic cotton. Pact’s bestsellers are also their most basic items, underwear and fit-and-flare dresses, which speaks to the comfort and quality of their fabrics.

Two scientists started the Happy Earth apparel company hoping to reinforce the connection between their clothing and the ecosystems supporting the materials they source. Their best-sellers are patterned hoodies and base layers, perfect for outdoor exercise.

How are these brands (and others) vetted?

The organization Good On You is a fantastic resource for this, with a site that “publishes the most transparent sustainability ratings for fashion, beauty, and retail brands.” Good On You rates clothing companies based on the environmental impact of production and finished materials, ethical supply chain and production practices, as well as impact on animals (in raw materials or product testing). All of the above companies have a rating of ‘great’ — and there are hundreds of other companies listed if you are curious about how your favorites stack up!
